Selling diamond jewellery is a rapidly growing market. With average resale rates of 60 to 80% for major houses and rising demand for iconic pieces from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Tiffany & Co., selling your jewellery has never been more profitable. But to get the best price, you need to understand how the market works.
The importance of the GIA or HRD certificate. The gemological certificate is the most important document when selling diamond jewellery. GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant) certificates are the most internationally recognised. A GIA-certified diamond sells for 10 to 20% more than one without a certificate. The certificate details the 4Cs, dimensions, fluorescence, and laser inscription number.
The 4Cs: understanding your diamond's value. Carat (weight): each threshold (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 carats) causes a price jump. A 1.00-carat diamond is worth 30 to 50% more than a 0.90-carat. Clarity (purity): from FL (flawless) to I3 (visible inclusions). VS1 and VS2 grades offer the best value for money. Color: from D (colourless) to Z (yellow tint). Grades D to G are the most valued. Cut: Excellent or Ideal maximises brilliance and price.
Cartier Love: the most sought-after icon. The Cartier Love bracelet in 18-karat yellow gold resells for 4,500 EUR to 6,000 EUR (retail: 7,300 EUR), a resale rate of 60 to 80%. The diamond-paved version fetches 8,000 EUR to 15,000 EUR pre-owned. The Juste un Clou bracelet is seeing growing demand with resale prices between 3,500 EUR and 5,500 EUR. Cartier pieces always sell easily thanks to constant worldwide demand.
Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra: the star collection. The Alhambra Vintage pendant in yellow gold and mother-of-pearl resells for 2,800 EUR to 4,000 EUR (retail: 3,850 EUR). The 5-motif bracelet: 4,500 EUR to 6,500 EUR. The Magic Alhambra 6-motif necklace exceeds 10,000 EUR pre-owned. Malachite and onyx versions are the most sought-after. Van Cleef boasts the best resale rates in the jewellery market, often exceeding 80%.
Tiffany & Co.: a timeless classic. Tiffany pieces benefit from strong brand recognition that supports resale prices. The Tiffany Setting solitaire in platinum resells for 50 to 70% of retail depending on carat and the 4Cs. The T Wire bracelet in rose gold: 800 EUR to 1,200 EUR pre-owned. The Return to Tiffany pendant in silver: 200 EUR to 350 EUR. The Elsa Peretti and Jean Schlumberger collections are the most collectible.
Resale rates by jewellery type. Engagement rings with GIA-certified diamond: 50 to 70% of purchase price. Cartier Love and Van Cleef Alhambra bracelets: 65 to 85%. High jewellery necklaces: 40 to 60% (smaller market). Diamond earrings: 45 to 65%. Jewellery watches (Cartier Panthere, Chopard): 50 to 75%. Pieces from major houses always resell better than those from independent designers.
The best time to sell. Demand for diamond jewellery peaks seasonally: before Valentine's Day (January-February), before the year-end holidays (October-November), and during wedding season (April-June). Selling during these periods can increase the price by 10 to 15%. Avoid selling in summer (July-August) when demand is at its lowest.
Essential documents for selling. Gather the GIA/HRD certificate for the diamond, the original purchase receipt (proof of ownership and price), the house certificate (Cartier, Van Cleef, Tiffany), and the original box. A complete file can increase the selling price by 15 to 25%. Without a gemological certificate, the diamond will need to be re-evaluated by an expert, which slows down the sale.

Mistakes to avoid when selling. Never sell your gold jewellery at metal-weight price — branded pieces are worth far more than their weight in gold. Do not accept the first offer without comparing. Do not clean jewellery with household products before selling. Do not remove personal engravings yourself — a professional jeweller will do it properly. And never lose your GIA certificate — it is nearly impossible to replace.
A Cartier Love bracelet in 18-karat yellow gold resells for 4,500 EUR to 6,000 EUR in 2026, or 60 to 80% of the retail price (7,300 EUR). The diamond-paved version reaches 8,000 EUR to 15,000 EUR. Pieces with box and certificate fetch the best prices.
It is not mandatory, but a GIA or HRD certificate increases the selling price by 10 to 20%. Without a certificate, the diamond will need to be appraised by a gemologist, which slows the sale and can reduce buyer confidence.
Cartier Love and Van Cleef Alhambra bracelets have the best resale rates (65-85% of retail). GIA-certified solitaires and iconic pieces from major houses also resell very well.
