In 2026, a Daytona 116500LN in steel with a black or white ceramic bezel commands between £27,200 and £54,400 on the secondary market — 3 to 5 times its boutique retail price. Gold versions (yellow or rose) achieve even higher premiums. The Daytona is the Rolex with the strongest speculative premium.
The Rolex Daytona was launched in 1963, named after the legendary Daytona Beach circuit in Florida. Its popularity exploded after Paul Newman wore reference 6239 in his films — the so-called 'Paul Newman' dial has since become the most valuable vintage Rolex in history, having sold at auction for $17.75 million.
Today, the Daytona in steel (reference 116500LN) is one of the most difficult watches to obtain in boutique worldwide, with waiting lists of 5 to 10 years. This absolute scarcity, combined with its iconic status, creates an exceptional secondary market premium.
Authentication of a modern Daytona begins with the serial number between the lugs, the reference 116500LN at 12 o'clock, and the original papers. The chronograph dial must present perfectly aligned sub-dials and clearly engraved tachymeter graduation.
The automatic movement, calibre 4130, is Rolex manufacture. The chronograph pushers must be firm and precise. The ceramic bezel with its engraved tachymeter graduation is virtually unscratchable. Any imprecision in the engraving or inconsistency in the dial is an immediate red flag.
The Daytona 116500LN steel with black dial and the 116500LN steel with white Panda dial are the most actively traded references. The Daytona in yellow or rose gold achieves higher values but has more selective demand. Vintage Paul Newman Daytonas are collector's pieces in their own right.
HAUTANE appraises Daytonas with particular rigour given their elevated value. Our collector client base enables rapid sales in consignment, often within 48 hours. Free estimate, immediate buyback with payment within 48 hours after appraisal.
Rolex deliberately limits Daytona production to maintain scarcity. Boutique waiting lists reach 5 to 10 years. This scarcity combined with extraordinary demand creates an unparalleled market premium in watchmaking.
Both command very similar values. The white Panda dial is slightly rarer and more fashionable. The black remains an enduring classic. The price difference is a maximum of 5 to 10%.
Historically, yes — strongly. Over the past 10 years, the steel Daytona's value has tripled. Short-term fluctuations are less predictable, but the investment remains solid over the long term.
The two markets are distinct. The modern 116500LN is more liquid and accessible. Vintage Daytonas (Paul Newman, Sigma dial) are collector's and speculative pieces, requiring specialist expertise. Paul Newman pieces have achieved record auction prices exceeding £10 million.
In consignment, 80% of Daytona 116500LN pieces sell within 48 hours. It is one of the most liquid watches on the market. With immediate buyback, payment within 48 hours after appraisal.
