How to Authenticate a Chanel Bag: 10 Checkpoints
The Chanel bag is one of the most counterfeited in the world. The popularity of the Classic Flap, Boy, and 2.55 makes them prime targets.
Since 2021, Chanel has replaced authenticity cards with an integrated RFID chip. This change has made authentication more complex for private buyers.
This guide details the 10 checkpoints used by our authenticators at HAUTANE, covering all Chanel models.
A reminder: professional authentication remains the only 100% reliable method. At HAUTANE, it is free and completed in under 4 hours.
Checkpoints
The CC logo
The two interlocking Cs are perfectly symmetrical. The right C overlaps at the top and goes behind at the bottom.
Tip : The Cs must be identical in size and cross over smoothly.
The quilting
The diamonds align perfectly from one side of the bag to the other, including on the flap.
Tip : Check the alignment at the side seam: the diamonds should continue perfectly.
The chain
Heavy, with oval welded links. The leather is interlaced without twisting. The plating is uniform.
Tip : A genuine Chanel chain is noticeably heavier than a counterfeit.
The hardware
All hardware bears the CHANEL engraving in capitals. Flawless finish, no burring.
Tip : Use a magnifying glass on the turnlock: the letters must be perfectly even.
The serial number
Before 2021: holographic sticker with 7-8 digits + card. After 2021: integrated RFID chip.
Tip : Pre-2021 stickers change colour at different angles. A matte sticker is suspicious.
The turnlock closure
Turns smoothly and locks with a satisfying click. No play whatsoever.
Tip : A turnlock that resists or has play is a common sign of a counterfeit.
The interior lining
Lambskin or quality fabric. Dark burgundy for classic black Classic Flaps.
Tip : A black lining on a black Classic Flap is suspicious — it should be burgundy.
The interior label
In leather with hot-stamped lettering. Made in France or Made in Italy. Sewn, never glued.
Tip : Check whether Made in France is on one or two lines depending on the era.
The zip
Chanel uses EP, Eclair, or Lampo zips. Smooth opening, even teeth.
Tip : A YKK zip on a recent Chanel is a sign of a counterfeit.
The authenticity card
Before 2021: black card with embossed gold number. After 2021: no card (RFID chip only).
Tip : The number on the card must be embossed — a flat number is a copy.
