Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. From crude copies to super-clones, knowing how to tell real from fake is essential.
Modern counterfeits are visually convincing. Some use 904L steel and cloned movements. Our watchmakers at HAUTANE detect them systematically.
This guide covers the 8 checkpoints applicable to all models: Submariner, Daytona, GMT-Master, Datejust, Day-Date.
Only a certified watchmaker can guarantee 100% authenticity. At HAUTANE, this verification is free.
Since 2002, a micro-crown is etched on the sapphire crystal at 6 o'clock. Nearly invisible, composed of microscopic dots.
Tip : Tilt the crystal under the light: the crown appears as a constellation of dots.
Magnifies the date exactly 2.5x. On a fake, often only 1.5x. The date fills nearly the entire window.
Tip : Close-up photo: the date should fill at least 75% of the cyclops window.
904L steel is denser. A Submariner weighs approximately 155g. Counterfeits are 10-20% lighter.
Tip : Weigh on a precision scale: any significant deviation is suspicious.
8 beats per second, smooth and continuous movement. Fake quartz watches tick once per second.
Tip : Watch for 10 seconds: perfectly smooth movement, like a glide.
Solid caseback (not transparent). Serial number and reference between the lugs. Fine laser engravings.
Tip : Numbers perfectly aligned and uniform — rough engraving = red flag.
Engraved between the lugs at 6 o'clock. Post-2005 also on the rehaut. Allows dating the watch.
Tip : Consistency: a post-2010 number on a model discontinued in 2008 = anomaly.
Screws down firmly with the crown logo engraved on the edge. Triplock system.
Tip : Precise and smooth threading, without forcing or jamming.
Blue-green Chromalight since 2008 (before: green Luminova). Uniform glow lasting approximately 8 hours.
Tip : Charge for 30 seconds under bright light, then observe in the dark: blue and uniform glow.
